The Sahitya Akademi Award has been awarded to a number of Indian literary legends like R.K. Narayan, Mukul Raj Anand, Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh, Mahasweta Devi and many other many others. The award endeavors to serve as the impetus of Indian literature promotion and those writers that are respected.
The process of recognising writers with the Sahitya Akademi Award, both the selectors and the award process itself are rigorous and very transparent. The Sahitya Akademi calls on the publishing houses, literary societies or other literary organizations by inviting their nominations. The nominating body reviews the files and a panel of experts further screen them for the works of artistry.
The selected works are forwarded to each chapter jury, made up of highly esteemed authors and literary experts. The juries are in charge of the evaluation of the works and pick the winners’ using their literary criteria which is a matter of discussion who is legal to require this test.
One of the issues that has been criticised with the Sahitya Akademi Award in the past was that it did not represent all languages and regions equally. But the Sahitya Akademi has implemented the necessary steps to address the stated challenges, and today we find a more inclusive and representative literary culture of India in the Sahitya Akademi awards.
The Sahitya Akademi Award, which has also been a cause of controversies in recent years, has been the centre of criticism by many writers for returning their awards as an act of protest against the rising intolerance in the country. Although this organization somehow maintained its neutrality and does not select works based on any political grounds, it still fulfils its function of discovering and highlighting the greatest literature in India.
